Before & After: Heatherstone Residence

This was such a fun project to work on! We went from a typical, one-story 1950s home in Sunnyvale, California to a two-story house that stands out from the rest of the homes in the neighborhood.

This is where we started: a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1,100sf home that had an entrance that was hidden from view from the front of the house.

The existing kitchen was a galley kitchen next to the garage. We pushed the garage forward in order to create a larger kitchen with a combined laundry and mud room connecting the two spaces.

While the living room layout stayed the same, we updated the fireplace mantle and added built-in bookshelves and cabinetry. The existing windows were reused and we refreshed the trim around them to match the renovations.

One of the concerns was the entry hallway of the house. Particularly, how we would enter the house and get to the back of the house without feeling like it was a tight space, or too long of a hallway. We wanted to leave the bedrooms on one side and the garage on the other side of the entry, and that left just enough room for a hallway.

We resolved this issue by creating a dramatic view to the dining room and backyard from the entry, added natural light by means of windows and glazed doors where possible, and also maximized the width of the hallway.

We also kept the bedrooms’ walls and windows, and refreshed the rooms with new flooring, lighting, trimwork and a fresh coat of paint.

It may be hard to believe, but half of the first floor was generally left intact (the side with the windows on the right), with the majority of the changes happening on the left side of the house and on the second floor.

We are so happy with the outcome of this project, and we hope you enjoyed this walkthrough of the Heatherstone project as well!
